calendar with 2 cubes

You are given 2 (regular, six sided) cubes and on each side of these cubes you are allowed to write any one single digit number. What numbers should each of these cubes have so that any day in the calendar (01,02, …, 31) can be represented using these  2 cubes?

    Cube 1: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    Cube 2: 0, 1, 2, 6 or 9, 7, 8

    I found this problem in “The Colossal Book of Short Puzzles and Problems” by Martin Gardner (1.3)

    There is a US patent issued for the calendar cube.

    For me, the highlight was the special relationship between two specific digits. That clue seems adequate for most who might get stuck.
